Team Owner: Ron Hemelgarn
The 2002 season marked Ron Hemelgarn's 20th anniversary as an IndyCar team owner. He first participated in the Indy 500 in 1978 as a sponsor of the cars of Dick Simon (1978-79), Spike Gelhausen and Josele Garza (1980) before he purchased the Primus team in 1984 and created Hemelgarn Racing. Since then he has employed team manager Lee Kunzman and engineer Ron Dawes to head up one of the longest-standing crews on the circuit. In 1996, Hemelgarn became one of the charter team owners of the newly-created Indy Racing League.

In 1996, Lazier earned the first-ever IndyCar Series pole position at the inaugural Indy 200 at Walt Disney World Speedway and scored Hemelgarn Racing's first Indianapolis 500 victory.

The team won the 2000 IndyCar Series championship, the first for Hemelgarn and Lazier, on the strength of two victories and six top-five finishes. They came close to repeating the feat in 2001 but finished second in the title chase.

Along the way, from Midwest short tracks like Toledo Speedway to world-class road courses like Laguna Seca, Ron has had his hand in nearly every aspect of the racing business, from promoting and sponsoring events, to developing technology and driver talent. A big part of his dedication to the sport has been his commitment to finding and developing the drivers of tomorrow. This commitment can be seen through his participation in the support series such as the Menards Infiniti Pro Series. He also has reached out to other sanctioning bodies to heighten awareness of grassroots racing as a stepping-stone to the major series.

Born in Dayton, Ohio in 1947, Ron Hemelgarn is a successful entrepreneur in the fitness and financial industry. From an early age, Hemelgarn has endeavored with strong work ethics and a positive attitude, inspiring those who work with him to do the same. His dynamic personality and commitment to success have earned him the respect of peers and fans alike.

Hemelgarn's business headquarters are located in Toledo, Ohio, while the race operations are based in Indianapolis. He and his wife Helen live in La Salle, Michigan. The couple has five children.
